An act of desperation and the beginning of seduction...

Spaceship captain Tara Rowan has her secrets. One is her Rider, Zie—an organic symbiote, like a living tattoo—that enhances Tara's physical abilities. But Zie is no ordinary Rider, and Tara can never risk anyone discovering Zie's true origins. Especially not the sexily dangerous stranger who appears out of nowhere and makes Tara's pulse race...

Except that "Trace Munroe" isn't exactly who he says he is. He's in fact a Holy Knight, who does everything by the book, and Tara is his only lead in tracking down a kidnapped princess. And Trace will do whatever it takes to get that information—including blackmail. But a blazing attraction to Tara is definitely complicating things...especially when Trace realizes that following his code of honor means destroying the woman he's falling for.

The first time I looked into this book, I started with the sample chapters, and didn't even make it past the first page. I hated the place where it began, with bits of dialogue and boring information slipped into in a setting I found worse than boring. I deleted the sample chapters in, I'd say, about 30 seconds tops, and then went searching for a new book. And I searched....and searched....

After failing miserably to find anything hopeful, I decided, well, one reviewer of Riding the Odds said it took them a couple of chapters to get into the story so, maybe I'll give it another shot. I did, and ended up struggling far enough through the book to purchase it.

Free sailing from there? Not quite. After I finally made it past the difficult sample chapters (and yes, I really did hate them) I made it to the point where Trace entered the scene, and it got even worse for me. Every two seconds the pov character would think about how sexy the other one was and how they wanted to jump them and have lots of babies. It was so bad it took me three days to get past that part and finally on to the rest of the story (yes, they eventually stopped thinking, every other sentence, about wanting to jump each other) which I found to be an utterly wonderful story written about strong characters that I couldn't put down.

Despite how much I hated the beginning, the writing was so fresh and enjoyable, and was riddled with unique movements and beats between dialogue. For example: "She paused and held her hands up in the what-can-you-do gesture." (My personal favorite) There was stuff like that all through the book, and I loved it. Another thing I appreciated was the fact that Tara remained strong throughout the entire story. I really despise how the vast majority of the time, strong female characters are eventually dominated and coerced into giving in to the stronger male character who practically forces them to acknowledge their vulnerability, and his strength. Seriously? Kill me! Strong women don't just turn weak like that. It's pathetic.

Tara in this story never did anything she didn't choose to do, remained strong from start to finish, and yet still formed an unbreakable and incredibly sweet bond to the equally strong Trace. It was a bond created naturally, based off mutual respect, and without Tara turning into a weak and vulnerable woman in desperate need of Trace's manly strength. I thought it was beautifully written.

And the biggest reason why I chose to post this review is because of how hard I struggled to get into the story, and how much I would have missed out on had I not pushed through it. The chapters I considered annoying didn't last long, and the rest of it I wouldn't have missed for the world. So if you pick up the book and find yourself wanting to put it down, just give it a little bit longer.

Riding the Odds edition by Lynda K Scott Romance eBooks Reviews

I really hope this world will be expanded in other books. I will be very disappointed if it isn't. The heroine rocked! I love kick ass heroines and Tara was certainly that. Tara's relationship with her "rider" made her a more developed and fleshed out romantic heroine. Her love interest Trace is more than just a "pretty" face. It was interesting to see how Tara's and Zie's partnership interacted with Tara's and Trace's burgeoning romance. Lots of action, adventure and heat to keep a science fiction/fantasy romance fan happy.
I rarely give a whole 5 stars, but this book was just that good. Had everything I like in a book. Mystery, intrigue, action, a touch of scary and a little paranormal thrown in with a wonderful, dramatic romance. Lots of emotions run high here. The mystery is twisty turny, you're like "oh, wasn't expecting that" Could really feel what our H and h are going trough. Their love is heart felt. Their lov'in steamy. Their HEA, completely worth it! The only thing I was disappointed in was that evil holy knight didn't get his karma, or at least nothing is said to that effect. I also didn't like how they were treated by the other holy knights, even after all they did....still a fantastic read, couldn't put it down.
I enjoy a good SciFi romance, and this book definitely fits that category. Loner Tara Rowan is an Independent Trader who travels the galaxy, picking up jobs carrying cargo between planets. Trace Munroe is a Holy Knight who was adopted into the royal family. When his sister goes missing, his investigation leads him to Tara.

Tara has many secrets she'd like to keep buried. When Trace blackmails her, she is forced into helping him find his sister. Things get complicated as their attraction to each other and their distrust of one another grow. Throw a gang of murdering pirates into the mix, and the action really takes off.

I like Tara's courage, independence, and strength of character, and the way she kicks butt when threatened. No damsel in distress is she. Her relationship with her Rider, Zie — a dragon symbiote, like a living tattoo that glides over her skin — was my favorite part of the story. Their telepathic exchanges cracked me up.

There were some sex scenes that were a little too explicit for my taste, but that's just my personal preference. I also could have done without some of the descriptions of boobs and butts and other body parts and the characters' constant thinking about these things about half way through the book. It started to get in the way of the story, and I was glad when the action picked up again.

All in all, it was an exciting read with likeable characters, and I would certainly recommend it to anyone who likes romance with their SciFi.
Tara Rowan is an independent ship's captain. She and her Rider, Zie, travel the galaxy looking for jobs. She has to keep moving. Her secrets are too dangerous. Can she escape the horror of her past? Apparently not. Trace Munroe is blackmailing her. He needs her help finding his kidnapped sister. He doesn't give her his real name or tell her what he does. He thinks nothing of blackmailing Tara, even though he is attracted to her. Can they beat the dangerous odds? Tara is a feisty woman. She's suffered greatly and keeps her pain deeply buried. She cares for people and will do everything in her power to help those who need her. Trace has always followed the rules. He likes Tara but he won't trust her. Tara agrees to help. She wants to protect "her family". The danger ramps up when they go to Bittersweet, a pirate base. This book pulls you in with interesting characters and non-stop action. This story is a roller coaster ride filled with twist and turns. Zie made me laugh when she kept calling Trace "Pretty". Lynda K. Scott has done a wonderful job creating a future world that requires determination and skill to survive. I hope there are more books. I want to learn more about Jackson and Drummer.
